About Me

Me

Hello!

Hi! My name is Chris Moylan. My days are spent hacking away at Ruby on Rails for the Chicago Tribune. By night, I tinker with hardware, software and Linux - if I'm not reading philosophical science fiction or playing guitar.

When I was younger I started an Internet radio station out of my basement. This led down many interesting paths. I discovered open-source software and most importantly Linux. Being the ever-curious person that I am I decided to dive into open source and have never looked back. Open-source software has enabled me to do things I never would have been able to otherwise. I turned my Xbox into a network-controlled entertainment center, added $500 of functionality to my $50 Linksys router, and now serve half-a-dozen websites out of my closet. I do not consider myself an evangelist by any means (to each his own, after all) but I am always willing to help those who express an interest in open source.

When I'm not on the computer I like to cook, read and play guitar. I'm a vegetarian and enjoy making things from scratch. Right now it's just breads and sauces, but one day I hope to make everything from scratch. For the past 10 years I've been in various bands. The most recent effort can be heard on iTunes. I'm more than a little proud of that.

I'm a budding audiophile too. I dug my father's old turntable out of the basement and enjoy grooving to recorded music on vinyl. I'm also researching tube amplifiers in the hope of building my own to finally do some justice to my vintage Magneplanar speakers. In the meantime though, I'm amassing a huge vinyl collection for the day when my stereo is 100% analog.

Anyway, I'm a friendly person and love hearing from others who share my interests. Feel free to drop me a line, if you feel so inclined.
